Right to Work

What the council needs to see, which documents are typically used, and how the in-person verification works.

Timing: Prepare alongside your other documents — originals are checked before a licence is granted.

What it is

Proof that you're allowed to work in the UK. The council asks for an acceptable image of right-to-work documents with the application and verifies original documents before a licence is granted. [A]

How it works

  1. 1British and Irish citizens typically use a passport (or a birth certificate with proof of National Insurance number). Check the council's right-to-work page for its current accepted list.
  2. 2If your status is digital (eVisa), generate a share code on GOV.UK so the council can check it online.
  3. 3Complete the council's Right to Work Document Assessment form, and quote your WTP reference when sending documents.
  4. 4Keep originals safe and bring them to your verification appointment — names must match exactly across every document.

Common mistakes

  • An expired passport or a document not on the council's accepted list.
  • Not generating a share code when your status is digital.
  • Spelling differences between your passport, licence and application.

Requirements change and can depend on your circumstances.
